Library List
We keep a library list of books weīve heard about, authors we enjoy and topics we wish to read about. At the library we have a treasure hunt to uncover some of the books on the list, and encounter a lot more along the way.

Felt Stories
Felt stories are a favourite of children of all ages. You can make your own, borrow from toy libararies or purchase them at craft and toy shops. Children enjoy picking out the characters and placing them on the board as you make up the story. No one story is the same. Children will have hours of fun just making up their own too.

Special Times
Reading aloud is a special, cuddly time for you and your child. It is a time of fond memories for the child and a great start in reading. Read aloud at a regualar time each day - first thing in the morning, during a meal, after Preschool, after lunch, at naptime or bedtime. It is an easy habit to establish and if you keep on hand a variety of stories, shouldnīt bore the reader too much!!

A Home Library
It is a great idea to keep a home library. This may be as small as a few books on a shelf, or as large as you wish. The books should be accessible to your preschooler. Donīt collect books that are "too good" for them to grab and leaf through as they feel like it. Go to a second-hand store or garage sales regularly and get a collection of quality stories that can be loved, used, read, enjoyed. Go through the books as you obtain new ones and pass on any out-grown titles to make room for your latest bargains.

First Phonics Books
Making your own first phonics readers can save money, time and energy. Really! You can quickly staple some card or paper together, write up a little story or simple words and pictures that cover your childīs exact current level of reading. Ideas include the tried and tested "a cat sat on a mat", "a dog sat by a log". Rhyming works well, and keep the number of new words to a minimum with beginners.
