First Discussion of Strangers
Your first discussion of "stranger danger" with your toddler can be uncomfortable. You donīt want to cause them fear or undue worry, but it is important that they are safe. I teach my little ones (who are not shy!) that they may not wander onto the street or leave Mummy in a shop as it is not safe. I say there are people who are not kind and kids are better off close to their Mummy than near these people. I think fairy tales have assisted me with visions of witches in Hansel and Gretel and the like. I donīt like to use scare tactics, and this is a very personal issue, but I feel it is important that kids are aware from a young age that there are "strangers" about. Please share your tips on this issue!

Drills
Fire drills are important at home. Do a practice run so kids know to get down and get out. Discuss possible exits, looking out for others and a meeting place outisde the building. Teach the emergency numbers (000 for us in Australia and 911 in the United States).

Swim Classes
Even if your toddler doesnīt learn to swim it is a great idea to get them comfortable in water. Teach them to hold their breath, blow bubbles and reach for the side or shore if they are out of their depth. Even these basic skills will help if they accidentally fall into water or find themselves in deep water. These are basic skills you can teach during any swimming session with your child. They are also often taught in beginnerīs swimming classes.

Continuing Safety
Just as you baby-proofed your home, it is important to keep your home safe for your preschooler. Preschoolers are inquisitive and want to help you. It is vital that they know about sharp knives, hot water and poisons. They can reach a lot more now, and undo baby locks, so these things are best explained as soon as the child will understand.

Fire Service
The local fire service are usually happy to show anyone around the fire station or to bring their vehicle to a group and discuss fire safety. Perhaps you can organise a tour or visit for your Preschool or Playgroup or homeschooling group soon?
